Renata Portes Appointed General Manager of Maroma

December 2, 2025

Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, is pleased to announce the appointment of Renata Portes as its new General Manager, effective November 24, 2025.

Renata Portes, General Manager of Maroma

Renata is responsible for the strategic management and operations of Maroma, further enhancing the distinguished guest experience and upholding Belmond’s commitment to its ethos of Slow Luxury, which invites guests to connect deeply with the rich culture and stunning natural beauty of the Riviera Maya. She will report directly to Tiago Sarmento, Area Managing Director, Mexico.

Renata brings two decades of exceptional experience within the luxury hospitality sector, having started her career with Belmond twenty years ago at the iconic Copacabana Palace, Rio De Janeiro, as a trainee. She progressed through various roles in Spa, Guest Relations, and Events, building a strong foundation in bespoke guest experiences and operational excellence. After gaining valuable international experience in the Maldives, Renata returned to Copacabana Palace, serving as Rooms Division Manager and later as Assistant Manager, Rooms.

In early 2023, Renata was appointed Hotel Manager at Hotel das Cataratas, a Belmond Hotel, and was subsequently promoted to General Manager in 2024. During her leadership tenure at Hotel das Cataratas, she guided her team through an impressive period of growth and achievement. Highlights under her direction include the successful launch of Y Restaurant, the property’s sustained recognition as the only Forbes 5-Star hotel in South America, placement on the extended World’s 50 Best list, the attainment of Three Michelin Keys, and recognition on the prestigious Forbes Edge list.

Beyond operational successes and industry accolades, Renata is also recognised for her impactful contributions to community and team engagement. During her time at Hotel das Cataratas, she significantly strengthened the property’s dedication to local initiatives, including active support for the “Onças do Iguaçu” project, a vital jaguar conservation initiative in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

Tiago Sarmento, Area Managing Director, Mexico, extended a warm welcome, stating, “We are truly delighted to welcome Renata Portes as General Manager for Maroma. Her extensive experience, proven leadership in luxury hospitality, and deep commitment to both operational excellence and community engagement align perfectly with Belmond’s values. Her appointment underscores our dedication to elevating the guest experience and reinforcing our Slow Luxury philosophy in Mexico. We eagerly anticipate her valuable contributions to our team and to the continued success of Maroma.”

Renata Portes adds: “I am honoured and excited to join the esteemed team at Maroma and immerse myself in the vibrant culture of Mexico. I am committed to upholding Maroma’s legacy of exceptional hospitality and enhancing the unique experiences that embody Belmond’s Slow Luxury ethos. I look forward to leading the team in creating unforgettable moments for our guests and continuing to build meaningful connections with our community.”
