Tewinbury Farm is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Hertford House Hotel and The Quiet Man public house in the centre of Hertford.

Tewinbury is a riverside farm and hotel just outside the town that has been the Williams family home since 1931. What began as a working dairy has, over three generations, become a place where farming and hospitality come together. The farm remains active today, with Uncle Ivor still tending the land, while the wider family has shaped Tewinbury into a destination known for seasonal food, homegrown produce and a genuine connection to nature.
The purchase of Hertford House and The Quiet Man marks an exciting new step in this journey. Hertford House, set across two Georgian townhouses, provides 28 bedrooms along with a restaurant and bar, while The Quiet Man is one of the town’s best-loved pubs.
For the Williams family, the acquisition is about more than growth. It is about bringing the farm to the city, blending rural roots with town-centre energy. Guests at Hertford House will experience the same approach that has defined Tewinbury for decades: food made with local produce, spaces designed for people to come together and an independent spirit shaped by nearly a century of family stewardship.
The Quiet Man will be a particular focus. Tewinbury is committed to keeping it a truly independent pub, rooted in the community and celebrated by locals as well as visitors. The vision is to maintain everything that already makes the pub special, while enhancing it with the warmth and character that guests have come to expect from Tewinbury.
The Williams family said:
“Our vision is to bring the farm to Hertford. This means seasonal food made with produce from our land, spaces where people feel connected, and a focus on independence and community. We are committed to keeping The Quiet Man a proper pub that Hertford can be proud of, while ensuring Hertford House becomes a welcoming place for both locals and guests of Tewinbury. This is a new chapter for our family farm, and we are excited to share it with the town we grew up in.”
As part of this new chapter, Tewinbury will be protecting all jobs and working closely with the existing teams at both Hertford House and The Quiet Man. Seasonal produce from the farm will begin shaping menus straight away, bringing the flavours of Tewinbury directly into the heart of Hertford. Neither venue will close during this transition and the immediate focus will be on supporting staff, enhancing menus and creating new opportunities for people to come together – from fresh seasonal events to festive celebrations later this year.
