Exale Brewing to Open The Black Eel Pub: Resurrecting an East-End Institution with Modern Flair

September 16, 2025

The Black Eel – Dalston’s newest pub, social hub and beer garden – is set to open this October, blending the spirit of old East London with a bold new energy.

Taking over the Grade II listed home of one of the East-End’s oldest pie and mash shops, The Black Eel brings Exale Brewing’s signature community spirit and playful flair to a landmark steeped in culture and history.

With its historic tiled shopfront, arched windows and original 1862 doorway mosaic, the building has long been a cornerstone of Dalston life. Now, Exale are breathing new life into the space, transforming it into a modern-day gathering place where locals can eat, drink and connect, while still nodding to the traditions that made the site iconic.

The Black Eel

From interiors with legendary-status, distinct entertainment spaces, and one of East London’s biggest hidden beer gardens, this new pub has been designed as a year-round destination.

Inside is a main bar, private karaoke room, darts and shuffleboard spaces, lounge zones and flexible hire rooms, all set across a 250-cover interior that blends original Grade II listed features with a contemporary, community-led design.

Outdoors, the social spirit continues: a 150-seat beer garden equipped with leafy seating nooks, a pétanque court and plenty of sheltered space brings The Black Eel’s community essence into the open air.

The Food

Taking over the kitchen is ‘Riley’s’, the latest project from chef Billy Fisher. With over 15 years of culinary experience spanning global kitchens, head-chef roles at Lagom and The Hawke Pub, and a string of successful residencies, Billy’s cooking is all about bold flavours and quality ingredients.

Expect confident, seasonal dishes built around comforting plates. Highlights include:

  • Steamed mussels with red onion
  • Marinated chestnut mushrooms with garlic, parsley and lemon
  • Pork ribs, pickles and hot honey

Desserts will include a Basque cheesecake with toffee sauce, and an autumn Eton Mess.

‘Sundays at Riley’s’ bring roasts to the table. With prime sourced Norfolk meat, organic British veg and fresh gravy, the ingredient-led offering is laid-back, lively and full of flavour. Roast pork belly, beef sirloin or celeriac with hazelnut crumb will be available to choose from alongside the full or à la carte menu.

The Drinks

Best known for their creative, modern beers, Exale Brewing’s drinks offering highlights hazy IPAs and fruited sours. The bar will also cover the classics, alongside craft beer, seasonal and signature cocktails, natural wines, and a wide range of low/no alcohol options.

The Story

The Black Eel is a confident next step from Exale Brewing, who are known for their drive in reviving East London’s tradition of pubs as community anchors. Following Exale Tap, Three Colts Tavern and William The Fourth Leyton, the team will open The Black Eel as their fourth venue this October.

The Black Eel will celebrate the site’s heritage by breathing life back into the space. Designed to foster Dalston’s creative, social energy, the pub will be more than a watering-hole – its clever design, creative food & drink offering and community-led spirit promise a new-age social hub, aimed for people who want ‘more from their local’. More choice, more atmosphere, more ways to enjoy.

Bookings are now open. Reservations recommended, walk-ins welcome.
