This July, Chef-Founder Luke Farrell will launch Speedboat Bar, bringing the neon-lit energy of Bangkok’s Chinatown to The Electric on Portobello Road. A West London follow-up to his cult Chinatown spot on Rupert Street.
Yaowarat Road is Bangkok’s Chinatown, and Speedboat Bar dives deep into the bold flavours of this unique cuisine – Chinese at its roots, unmistakably Thai in spirit. The new Notting Hill site moves beyond the traditional shophouses – reimagined at The Electric – bringing the same fiery flavours that have earned the restaurant its devoted following. Expect fragrant curries packed with heat and herbs, zingy salads that hit with citrus and chilli, wok-tossed stir fries, and slurp-worthy noodles served from lunch until late. An experience best enjoyed with whisky sodas, Singha beer towers and knockout cocktails.
“A Thai speedboat racing team isn’t driven by one person. It’s the whole crew – tight, fearless, and tuned to perfection – says Luke Farrell about the new opening, “From the meticulous mechanics squeezing every last drop from their engines, to the traditional boat builders, the gleaming livery and bold paintwork down the sides – these machines are a craft. A melding of classic and contemporary, and quintessentially Thai.
That spirit defines Speedboat Bar. From sourcing ingredients directly from Thailand, to growing the seasonal herbs in my tropical greenhouses, to building a team that can faithfully recreate everything from Bangkok’s Chinatown and beyond. Recipes entrusted to us – some from the racers themselves.
We’re excited to announce the opening of Speedboat Bar at The Electric this summer. This time around, the interiors are a bit different – less Bangkok shophouse with a clubhouse above, more engine room. A place to build, tune, and roar these beasts into life…so we brought one in – a real Thai speedboat engine, decked out in chrome.
We’re ready to bring this same energy to the renowned Electric House. Start your engines!”
Open to the public, Speedboat Bar at The Electric will be located at 191 Portobello Road, operated in partnership with JKS Restaurants and the Soho House Group. Opening times will be 12pm-11pm Sunday to Thursday and 12pm-1am Friday and Saturday.
