We are delighted to report another busy month at the Kitchen Porters Club, examining entries for their Kitchen Porter of the Month competition. As always, in what has become a sought after accolade entries were received from across the UK, with most sectors of our industry well represented.
Following careful consideration by the judges, head of the judging panel Meiko UK managing director, Paul Anderson concluded that the May 2025 Kitchen Porter of the Month award would go to Sarah Buchanan, a trainee at The Crumbs Project in Bournemouth.
Sarah was nominated by The Crumbs Project’s Head of Centre, Ursula Boardman whose nomination read: “We have trainee Sarah Buchanan who is working very hard on her KP skills. Last week she was witnessed supporting a trainee on dishwash without being prompted. Sarah saw the struggle and went straight to help explaining what needed to be done.
“Sarah has Autism and can be quite challenging but when she puts her skills to use, we encounter a very different young lady.
“It was wonderful to hear the story from our trainer, Jane. Who also said that Sarah loves to get everyone organised in the kitchen after lunch in the dishwasher area.
“I think Sarah is a perfect candidate and this will increase her confidence and demonstrate how much progress she has made.”
Meiko’s Paul Anderson told us: “It’s an interesting process reviewing the entries every month as they are considered and reflect team culture. Most who work in our industry, and that might be all in back of house roles, know just how vital every kitchen porter is. Taking a few minutes out to nominate a kitchen porter colleague for an award however requires action, not much admittedly as we do try to keep things simple, but it does require action.
“This nomination reflected a sense of comradery, helping others, being mindful, sharing experience and working together, all are qualities essential in hospitality. So, we are delighted to recognise Sarah Buchanan as our Kitchen Porter of the Month for May, well done Sarah!”
