Hyll is a hotel opening in the North Cotswolds in early summer, 2025. Beautiful in design and setting, with a focus on comfort, escape, and nourishment, Hyll makes room for guests to slow down, switch off and reset on their own terms.
The demand for luxury country house hotels has not abated, but Hyll is one of the new breed of hotels focusing much more tightly on a distinct audience who have a different idea about the meaning of luxury. Hyll’s offering taps into a growing demand of those seeking an unhurried, restorative travel experience. With a focus on culture, art and literature, Hyll will offer guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in doing nothing amongst the beauty of the Cotswolds.
Named after the old English word for an elevated position, Hyll has views across all five counties of the Cotswolds. A fully restored Grade II-listed 17th Century Manor House features eight bedrooms, lounges, a restaurant, snug and bar. Adjoining former outbuildings feature a further four suites and fourteen contemporary-designed rooms. Early 2026 will see the launch of Hyll’s new Bower space catering for both weddings and corporate events. Designed by Tim Groom Architects, the 150-capacity barn style building will be built in local stone and timber and provide panoramic views over the Cotswolds.
Hyll is the first venture for Madfabulous Hotels, an operator founded by entrepreneurs Paul Baker and Sarah Ramsbottom. Sarah has been involved in the events-based hospitality sector in the North for 20 years, with her projects including the redevelopment of the Grade II* Soughton Hall near Chester. Paul, an entrepreneur and craft baker by trade, founded the international bakery brand St Pierre Groupe in 1996 and now oversees a range of business interests across a number of sectors.
Hyll’s ethos will be to relax the hotel rule book – timings are flexible, guests can arrive and leave when they like and will not be rushed out of the door after breakfast. Guests can indulge in the pleasures and luxuries that, today, are often the hardest to come by. They can pack their phone away and put a record on, choose from the hotel’s book menu, indulge in a breakfast picnic in bed or meander around the hotel grounds. Hyll boasts a beautiful 60-acre estate with breathtaking views and a growing collection of contemporary sculpture. Given its position near Chipping Campden and Broadway, those looking to venture further afield can try local walking and cycling routes hotel-curated shopping guides.
Hyll’s restaurant, under head chef Mark Coleman, honours the ethos of the hotel by serving an unpretentious, wholesome menu showcasing the best of local Cotswold producers. A cosy bar sits at the heart of the hotel and will serve drinks throughout the day with a best of Cotswolds menu, featuring producers such as Hawkstone and Capreolus.
Much of Hyll’s interiors, including eighteen guest bedrooms, the restaurant and bar, and future Bower events space have been designed by Manchester based YOUTH studio, whose design approach has focused on subtraction, rather than addition. The studio looked to create a retreat that was born from its landscape which encourages guests to disconnect, slow down, and embrace stillness.
The landscape and materiality of the Cotswolds region was the primary design inspiration for Hyll, taking apart the stereotypical ‘picture postcard’ countryside retreat and looking at the raw, weathered landscape that has been shaped by time. Each of the bedrooms YOUTH have designed are deliberately uncluttered, and public spaces are defined by soft transitions, with quiet corners and seating arrangements encouraging slow conversation or solo reflection. Oliver Collinge, Co-Founder of YOUTH says, “A shared understanding of materiality, atmosphere, and the power of spatial storytelling naturally led to Hyll. We wanted to create a space that strips away the noise of the modern world, favouring a raw, sensory-driven approach. That alignment in philosophy made the collaboration feel inevitable.”
The eight bedrooms of the Grade II-listed 17th Century Manor House, now fully restored, as well as two lounge areas, have been designed by Jolie Studio.
Naturalmat beds, duvets and pillows, Verden toiletries, Grind coffee machines and Dyson hairdryers provide the ultimate in comfort and convenience. Well-stocked in-room pantries, quality magazines, cultural partnerships and a monthly book menu curated by the Stow-on-the Wold based Borzoi Books will ensure guests leave nourished in both body and mind.
