SeaSpace lifestyle aparthotel opens in Cornwall

October 19, 2024

SeaSpace has now opened its doors as the first coastal lifestyle aparthotel in Cornwall, with its fresh take for the region, SeaSpace blends the best of a lifestyle hotel with all the freedom of self-catering.

The brainchild of the team behind Watergate Bay Hotel, Another Place and Beach Retreats, the project has been two years in the making, with rigorous planning, energy and effort going into its development.

Noticing a shift in how travellers are looking to stay and aware of the rising popularity of aparthotels in urban settings, SeaSpace attempts to offer a direct and compelling response.

Bringing the flexibility, value and choice of the hospitality model into a UK coastal context. Guests can find themselves at home in modern, self-contained studios & apartments elevated by hotel-like amenities, including a flavour-forward café and craft beer-led bar, health club including a 19m classic Miami-style inspired swimming pool, gym and studio with a programme of classes to suit all.

A Padel tennis club with the first singles courts in the Southwest as well as doubles courts will add the highly social sport into the mix, for guests and locals to enjoy.

From independent leisure travellers to young families looking for a fresh perspective on the British beach break, work-from-anywhere professionals to groups with an appetite for something new, SeaSpace is for anyone looking to tap into the spirit and energy that comes with the coastal lifestyle.

Set on the east cliffs beyond Newquay, on the site of the former Sands Resort, SeaSpace is delighted to be welcoming back several former Sands employees, to help carry the new venture forward building on the local knowledge and knowhow they brought to the aparthotel’s former incarnation.

SeaSpace’s general manager, Mark Williams says: “We can’t wait to introduce guests to this new way of staying. With its relaxed feel and community-first focus, along with insider insight and freedom to choose, we’re giving people the independence to make their stay their own.”

Innovative design meets unparalleled location

Drawing the outside in, with its cool greens and muted yellows, soft pinks and calming blues; SeaSpace mirrors the views, ambience and natural colour palette of the Southwest coast path, found just moments from its front door. Designed for social living, the open plan private and shared spaces capture the unique sense of community SeaSpace is flying the flag for, encouraging connection with fellow guests, with the environment, and with the likeminds who call Newquay home.

In its £11m complete renovation, architects Kay Elliot wanted the reimagining of the building to be a modern take on the heyday of the British seaside in the 1950s. This mid-century vibe can be felt throughout the shared spaces, as well as the contemporary studios & apartments with fully equipped kitchens and spacious living areas overlooking the Atlantic.

Built on a bedrock of sustainable principles, from drawing on renewable sources and slashing energy usage, to creating better working lives for its team and welcoming in the local community, ethics and a strong environmental mindset align to underpin SeaSpace’s big plan to become B Corp certified.

Within a 15-minute drive of the A30 and Cornwall Airport Newquay, SeaSpace is well placed to unlock everything the county has to offer. From the world-class surfing beaches of Fistral and Watergate Bay, to the bustle of Newquay itself with its vibrant food and arts scenes, to the biomes of the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the gems of the south coast shores — everything is a short walk, Beryl bike, bus ride or drive away.

A visionary concept for Cornwall – and beyond

Community is at the heart of the SeaSpace vision, a place where individual freedom meets shared spirit. Minutes from Porth beach’s shoreline, an open-house mindset welcomes everyone in. Working closely with local suppliers and carefully curated partners, together with offers, events and memberships for local residents, this is a place for guests, visitors and passers-by to meet, mingle and relax.

As the flagship site, SeaSpace Cornwall will open with 56 studios & apartments, increasing to 72 in 2025. Planning permission has also been granted for 24 lodges in the grounds. And Cornwall is just the beginning. A unique proposition in hospitality meeting the needs and appetites of today’s guests, SeaSpace has its sights firmly set on growth.

SeaSpace CEO Ben Harper says: “The aparthotel is proven in urban environments, and it has been a long-held vision to translate this into a coastal environment. We’ve written a new chapter for this former seaside hotel and that’s a great privilege. With a brand designed to scale, we’re keen to seize the opportunity to do this in other markets around the UK coastline.”
