A short lesson in resilience from the TWO Services team

August 5, 2024

The hospitality industry is one of a kind. It’s fast-paced, it’s unrelenting, and it’s unpredictable, often presenting us with challenges that we never saw coming (let’s not even talk about Covid…).

And these challenges do, of course, extend to the companies that service hospitality businesses; firms like TWO Services, which provides expert cleaning and maintenance services for commercial kitchens up and down the country.

AT TWO, we understand the need to move with the times – and we’ve consistently evolved to meet the needs of our clients and the sector we’re in. (You can learn more about our journey to date – and the shifts our leadership team have endured – in this article from last year.) But we’re under no illusion that we wouldn’t be where we are today without the strength, resilience, and loyalty of our team.

Sam Roff, our Service Manager, is an excellent example of a member of staff who has continued to show up for us and our clients, even in the face of adversity. Sam has endured a range of health conditions during her 13-year career with TWO, including handling her Crohn’s diagnosis, undergoing several surgeries, and navigating two pregnancies. As she herself says:

“I can honestly say that, despite dealing with everything that’s been going on, I’ve only ever had 10 days off sick in the 13 years I’ve been here. I remember turning up to the office when I was 30 weeks pregnant with my second child, with a drain in my side because I had an 8cm abscess in my stomach. If I haven’t been able to drive because I’m recovering from surgery, I’ve worked from home wherever possible. I believe that the only way to get over these things is to keep your mind busy and push on.”

You can learn more about Sam here, and the fundraising initiatives she takes part in to raise cash for the charity Crohns & Colitis UK.

We do everything we can to look after our employees, regardless of what they are going through, and time off was offered to Sam so she could recover at her own pace – but she felt that she was best placed to be back at work, and who were we to argue when Sam does such an amazing job day-to-day, and is so well-liked by our clients?

We would never expect any of our team members to make the decision that Sam made. However, her resilience and willingness to support our business is certainly inspiring. Looking to other staff stories, we see a clear pattern: regardless of where they come from, their previous career experience, or the role they play within our business, a high percentage of the people who come into the TWO family are strong, capable individuals who have had to overcome plenty of hardship in their personal and professional lives. Despite everything, they have always been – and still are – committed to helping us deliver the best possible service to the hospitality businesses who rely on us throughout the year.

Every business has its tales of resilience, but at TWO, we’re confident that we employ some of the toughest and most adaptable people in our sector. Thank you, team – your efforts do NOT go unnoticed.

And here’s to everyone in our readership who continues to put the work in, even when it feels like an uphill battle. We’re still here because we love what we do – and we’re sure you do, too!
