Danish Japanese restaurant group, Sticks’n’Sushi, known for its unique combination of quality sushi and sticks, will open its 14th UK location in Islington this September.
This marks the brand’s first venture into North London and is part of Sticks’n’Sushi’s growth strategy to extend its reach into London’s residential neighbourhoods, following the successful opening of Richmond in May.
Islington is individual in design yet unmistakably a Sticks’n’Sushi restaurant, the space features a large open plan dining room, kitchen counter, lounge and bar, along with outdoor seating. The brand’s longstanding Berlin-based designers, Diener & Diener, have embraced Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian elegance, whilst also reflecting the storytelling of the residential address.
The restaurant is made up of two single-storey buildings, which collectively come together to create an inviting and open space. The unique timber and glass façade brings in an abundance of natural daylight and visual connection to the street, while abstract pendant lighting, natural furnishings and warm, earthy tones of yellow and muted greys, create an atmosphere that is as sophisticated and welcoming as the service, embodying the renowned Japanese concept of ‘Omotenashi’ – to wholeheartedly look after every guest.
The new 120-cover, double-fronted, 3,500 sq. ft restaurant will open seven days a week in the popular and vibrant dining destination of Upper Street, overlooking Islington Green. The menu will serve the high-quality, fresh food for which the restaurant group is known, with the likes of modern sushi, salads and grilled sticks. Signatures include favourites such as the Black Cod house roll – miso-marinated black cod with vegetable chips & pickled red onion with a range of set menus to suit varied tastes and budgets. The food menu is complemented by an extensive drinks offering, including cocktails, sake and Japanese teas.
Andreas Karlsson, Sticks’n’Sushi Group CEO comments: “We’re delighted to be bringing Sticks’n’Sushi and our exceptional guest experience to North London this September, creating 50 jobs locally for existing and new fishes to join the Sticks’n’Sushi family. Islington’s Upper Street is a prime location and bustling dining destination, a perfect addition for our energetic and contemporary brand. We look forward to welcoming the local community as well as attracting those from the nearby neighbourhoods of Hampstead, Belsize Park and Highgate.”
Originating in Copenhagen, Sticks’n’Sushi is one of Denmark’s longest established and much-loved restaurant groups. Founded by half-Danish, half-Japanese brothers Jens and Kim Rahbeck and Thor Anderson, the group consists of 28 restaurants across Copenhagen, Berlin and the UK.
