With its autumn opening fast approaching, Hotel Gotham Newcastle has announced the appointment of Chris Thompson, former Operations Manager of the Apartment Group, as the new hotel’s general manager.
Bringing a wealth of experience from his tenure with other brands including Malmaison and Hotel du Vin, Thompson will lead the team at Hotel Gotham Newcastle.
Sharing his excitement about his new role, Chris said: “There is already a buzz in the city regarding the opening, so I can’t wait to welcome guests to stay in the quirkiest but most luxurious surroundings in the North East. The food and beverage offering will be like no other, whether dining in our restaurant, sipping cocktails in our bar or dancing the night away to live music, Gotham will have it all and provide experiences that Newcastle hasn’t seen yet.
“I’ve watched the project for some time now with excitement and anticipation. It’s an iconic building in Newcastle in an area with so much redevelopment. Gotham is more than a hotel, it’s an experience where every detail is designed to exceed your expectations. There is nothing like it in the city. The potential is enormous, so when the opportunity arose, I had to be a part of it.”
Hotel Gotham Newcastle aims to redefine hospitality by blending history with contemporary elegance, on the site of the city’s former fire station and police station. Opening in late 2024, the fire station side of the building will feature 60 thoughtfully designed bedrooms for a luxurious and unique stay. Guests can also enjoy the restaurant and bar, complete with a DJ booth. The police station side of the hotel will open in late 2025, offering 30 carefully curated bedrooms and an event space in the historic Court Rooms, accommodating gatherings of up to 120 guests.
Thompson is currently building his pre-opening team, choosing individuals with a passion for delivering memorable guest experiences. By incorporating successful elements from Hotel Gotham Manchester and adding unique twists, the hotel aims to become the premium destination in Newcastle. The hotel also seeks to engage with local businesses and build strong relationships within the community, supporting local events and activities.
