By Majella Taylor, New Openings Editor, H&C News: Maddox Tavern, a beautiful British Brasserie.
Recently I was kindly invited to the launch of Maddox Tavern, the all-day British Brasserie now open in Mayfair. The room was full of the industry’s most respected restaurant people. A who’s who on the European and UK restaurant scene. Movers, shakers, deal makers, that immediately confirmed this launch was one of note.
Entering this stunning grade II listed building that was once the dapper Cooling Lawrence & Sons Gentleman’s Outfitters, it was clear no expense has been spared on the recent refurbishment.
The attention to detail is pronounced. It’s brand new, and also feels like you’re stepping back in time. Mahogany, perfectly polished brass, copper top bar, rich dark walls and sensual red leather seating, Maddox Tavern is opulent, luxurious, and enticing.
We were welcomed with fabulous cocktails, champagne and wines alongside Great British fare including mini-burgers, mussels with caviar, and mini-fish pies.
The star of the show was the English cheese board that lay seductively in the dining room, alluring and yet forbidden, waiting until officially declared open. Dressed impeccably, waiting to be enjoyed, and enjoyed it was.
Let’s briefly talk about the menu. Created by Jon Grimes, previous Aqua Kyoto, and one of my old haunts Gilgamesh. The menu comprised deluxe British dishes including ‘The Maddox Full House’ for breakfast, an all-day à la carte menu including English shellfish cocktail, glazed lamb rack, pork sausages, and sharing platters all at very approachable price tags.
Plus, in my opinion, they’ve got their English cheese board just right, and perfectly balanced for a mere £16.
The wine and drink menu by Tony Vega have me already planning what cocktails I’m commencing my next visit with.
The venue is breathtakingly beautiful, impeccable and impressive. Everything about it. Every staircase, every door, every doorknob. The private dining rooms are faultlessly designed and made me wish my birthday was sooner, any excuse to re-visit.
The service was outstanding and the team couldn’t have been more attentive and accommodating.
I look forward to returning in August for dinner with a good friend. Although that seems too far away.
It’s the kind of place that I know my guests will take their guests and so on and so on.
Final Thought… I feel like I could sit on the mezzanine in this very British Brasserie all day and all evening, just soaking up the atmosphere, the history, people-watching, and enjoying the delights of the menu.
Highly recommended
