Lufthansa last week was forced to reduce on flight meals for its short and medium haul routes departing from Frankfurt.
Germany’s leading airline reported the gaps in its foodservice to passengers being as a consequence of its catering contractor Gate Gourmet struggling with people and skills shortages.
Catering was absent for the economy class passengers, but remained in place for business class. The issue was also limited to short and medium haul routes, long haul was not affected.
Gate Gourmet’s owner GateGroup issued a statement on Friday saying the difficulties were limited to only a small number of flights, and exclusively Frankfurt airport.
The reporting of people and skills shortages seems to be growing in hospitality across Europe and the wider world, especially the US. At least the nations within the EU can look to recruit cross border, unlike here in the UK.
