The Vineyard, near Newbury in Berkshire, has just launched The Vine Bar, a new lunchtime offering showcasing the hotel’s phenomenal 30,000-bottle cellar, alongside a short menu of snacks and small plates.
Romain Bourger, The Vineyard’s Head Sommelier, and current ‘Taittinger UK Sommelier of the Year’ has selected 50 wines available by the glass, carafe, and full bottle. He has also proposed a wine pairing for every dish on the menu.
The Vine Bar’s varied wine list covers both Old and New World options, as well as English wines, and selections from owner Sir Peter Michael’s California winery.
Alongside numerous affordable choices, such as an Argentinian Torrontés from Piattelli Vineyard (£8 glass), premium vintages include a 2016 Château Roche aux Moines Savennières from the Loire Valley (glass £29); a 1985 Château Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia (glass £32); and a 1995 Château Lafite-Rothschild 1er Cru Classé (glass £175).
In addition to the à la carte wine list, Wine Trees (from £15) offer a fuller wine tasting experience. Each Tree showcases three wines with a theme, such as ‘Taste of the Golden State’ with some of Romain’s favourite Californian wines. The sommelier team engages with guests throughout, and is happy to add the challenge of identifying each wine.
As well as snacks, charcuterie, and cheese, the menu of small and larger plates, devised by The Vineyard’s Executive Chef Tom Scade, includes the following:
- Porthilly oysters with Nam Jim dressing (£3 each/£8 for three)
- Berkshire pork ham hock and guinea fowl terrine with pickled radish (£8)
- Wild mushrooms on sourdough (£9)
- Berkshire trout ceviche with cucumber and lime (£15)
- Lightly curried St Austell mussels with apple (£9)
- Braised lamb shoulder ‘Provençal’ with olive oil mash (£14)
- Pheasant schnitzel with fried Beechwood Farm egg (£11)
- Croissant and chocolate bread and butter pudding (£8)
- Fig leaf ice cream with fig leaf olive oil (£7)
“The Vine Bar is the perfect addition to the hotel, recognising our very strong wine culture. Its relaxed lunchtime offering encapsulates what The Vineyard is all about – great food with excellent wine,” enthused the hotel’s General Manager Paul Shanahan. “The dishes and paired wines combine both Tom and Romain’s expertise, and we are thrilled to make such a diverse and carefully-chosen selection of wine accessible to our guests.”
The Vine Bar is open Wednesday-Saturday from 12.30pm-2.30pm. The Restaurant, where Tom Scade’s full à la carte menu is available, is open from Wednesday-Sunday 5pm-8pm (last orders), and for Sunday lunch from 12.30pm-2.30pm.
