The H&C News Petition to Parliament asks: “The Government should ease immigration restrictions on EU nationals and other migrant workers with experience of working in the UK hospitality industry, at least temporarily, immediately. This could be achieved by creating a new hospitality visa, or exempting non-UK nationals with relevant experience from immigration requirements.”
What it is NOT:
A remedy to the long term people and skills crisis in hospitality.
A request to reverse Brexit.
What it IS:
A way of helping hospitality businesses to have adequate levels of people, with the relevant skills and experience to satisfy demand NOW for reopening and a boost in DEMAND for staycations, NOW.
Why should I or anyone else sign this petition?
If you work in hospitality, you will doubtless be doing so in a team that is under resourced, if not already, you will soon. The math behind that statement is simple. Figures from the ONS show a minimum of 355,000 non UK nationals left hospitality post Brexit, during the pandemic, and are now unable to return. Experienced and skilled people that match the job requirements of hospitality employers NOW.
If you do not work in hospitality, but enjoy partaking in it, your ability to do so will be limited unless people, with the relevant skills and experience to meet your requirements are allowed back to work.
NOW being the crux of the matter.
The people and skills shortages are already painfully evident, and impact every sector and segment of hospitality. No amount of ad hoc induction training to novices entering hospitality can possibly make up the shortfall. They have been tried before by this Government and fallen way short of remedying the same issue when of far smaller scale and scope.
