D&D London have announced details of the launch of its restaurant in Stratford, East London called Haugen to open in September 2021.
An all-day dining brasserie, restaurant, deli, outdoor terraces and rooftop bar, Haugen will serve food taking inspiration from Alpine dining in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. The menu will feature modern versions of classic Alpine dishes through lunch and takeaway service.
Occupying The Pavilion at International Quarter London (IQL), the new venue will stand at the gateway to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
In total the restaurant complex will provide 544 covers. This includes a ground floor deli with grab and go counter, a casual ground floor restaurant featuring an indoor Winter Garden and large terrace, a first-floor dining room and cocktail bar with outdoor terrace and two private dining rooms, and then on the second floor, a rooftop bar with spectacular views of Stratford and the Olympic Park. Haugen will have 100 covers outdoors split over a large ground floor terrace and first floor wrap around outdoor dining space.
Hospitality design studio, Afroditi Krassa is responsible for the design of Haugen. Founded in 2002 by product designer Afroditi Krassa, the studio’s radical new approach to hospitality design led to the creation of some of the most iconic restaurants of the past decade including Dishoom and Heston Blumenthal’s restaurants.
The wooden structure of the building created by Acme and interior design by Afroditi Krassa will create an atmosphere reminiscent of Alpine chalets. The structure of the building features large windows which will bathe diners in natural light through the day. At night, faux fur throws, intimate corners and warm lighting will aim to create a fun and convivial ambience.
The name ‘Haugen’ is tribute to an unsung hero of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and a celebration of Stratford’s role in hosting the 2012 London Olympics.
Des Gunewardena, Chairman and CEO of D&D London commented: “I hope Haugen will be something unique and special in the London restaurant scene. When you see Haugen coming out of Stratford Station on the way to the Olympic Park, it will certainly grab your attention. The Pavilion is a remarkable building. Our restaurant and food concepts have been inspired by its architecture and location. For those Londoners who love their Alpine rostis and tartiflettes this will be a must go restaurant. But for those who prefer to maintain their Olympian body shapes there will be plenty of tasty options too!”
Guy Thomas, Head of Place Assets, Lendlease, said: “Since its inception we have always seen The Pavilion as an iconic building which will help form a new focal point and heart for IQL and Stratford. D&D’s concept of Haugen as a warm, welcoming place for all Londoners with an Alpine theme works perfectly with the CLT structure, which is celebrated inside and out. Haugen will undoubtedly put Stratford on the map as a destination for all food lovers, as well as acting as a focal point for the community. We look forward to its opening in September.”
