The PM yesterday served warning to the hospitality industry of delays in ‘his’ reopening roadmap because of ‘his’ delay in adding India to the red list.
The two are inextricably linked and there was no recognition of the fact. It was an audacious insult, ‘he’ chose to prioritise a new trade deal with India ahead of the nation’s health and economy. Now ‘we’ pay the price.
Step 3 will progress on Monday, but amidst continued restrictions that are unlikely to be eased any time soon. Step 4 the PM advised could face “serious disruption”. Why, because the PM allowed travel from India into the UK when 1 in 4 cases worldwide were occurring in India.
Just how inept the process was, and how prejudiced it was towards proclaiming a new trade deal is highlighted in detail by Ed Conway, Economics & data editor at Sky News. The article – COVID-19: The three days in April that may have fuelled UK outbreak of Indian coronavirus variant – provides insight and timelines on how flawed decision making will cost us all in the weeks and months ahead.
On 17 April we were warning about the delay with the opening paragraph – “In years to come… documentary makers will have difficulty convincing people watching programs about the Covid-19 pandemic that the government of the day really was as inept as the facts will demonstrate.”
