Following the murder of hotelier Sir Richard Lexington Sutton, in a knife attack at his north Devon home on Wednesday, that also left his wife Anne Schreiber, critically wounded and in hospital suffering from knife wounds, a police chase across five counties ensued.
The murder took place at the hotelier’s country home in the small village of Higher Langham, near Gillingham, north Dorset.
After police were alerted and visited the property, they discovered that the suspect had left the scene in a Range Rover.
This then triggered a police operation tracking and following the vehicle across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey. As the car approached London helicopters were also deployed.
A team of armed SCO19 firearms officers in an armed response vehicle then moved to operate a ‘hard stop’ on the vehicle in Chiswick, West London.
Eye witnesses to the scene reported as many as 40 officers were involved, a police car forced the Range Rover to stop by pulling in front of it, and armed officers then surrounded the vehicle.
The driver was then pulled out of the car, and as he was police were removing his clothing as they forced him to the ground. The driver had sustained numerous injuries, much of his clothing was then removed before he was wrapped in silver foil and received medical assistance from the police.
Paramedics soon arrived on the scene and then took over medical treatment before he was placed into an ambulance and taken away.
Sir Richard Sutton was a very wealthy man, his hotels included the Athenaeum, Mayfair, London and the Sheraton Grand, on London’s Park Lane, MGallery hotels in Bath, Cheltenham and Windsor amongst others.
