There will be circa 3 million self-employed entrepreneurs watching the budget this afternoon, all hoping for an eleventh hour reprieve in financial support from the chancellor.
The 3 million group comprise many segments of self – employment status, from PAYE freelancers to company directors.
Timing and longevity is what most impacts all in this group, as becoming self-employed after April 5 2019 means producing the three years of tax returns required for most support is simply not possible. But no good reason has ever been provided as to why this time criteria should exclude them from support.
Help through lobbying has been provided through the All Party Parliamentary Group ‘Gaps in Support’, the largest APPG in parliament. Membership of 262 MP’s covers all political parties and regions of the UK.
As well as lobbying, the APPG looks to find solutions for those who have been excluded from government support schemes during the Coronavirus pandemic. The 262 members of this APPG will be scrutinising every word from the chancellor later. As will 3 million forgotten entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurial talent requires nurturing, and is the foundation of many industries, including hospitality where a significant proportion of the ‘forgotten’ directly and indirectly belong to.
It would seem politically naïve that after almost a year of suffering financial impact from the pandemic the chancellor will continue to allow gaps in policy that affect so many to persist.
