The government has extended local council lockdown powers until 17 July which could see hospitality providers remain closed far longer than any official announcement has previously set out.
New directives enabling local authorities to enforce closure of venues seen as social gathering points were introduced last year. Now, without any fanfare the new directives have been extended to mid-July.
Without an official government statement clarifying their policies on lockdown and the potential for them to remain in place longer than previously stated, these actions only further jeopardise the positions of businesses and people that are most impacted from them.
The government need to state clearly what their plans are, and if that includes extended periods of lockdown, what financial support will be provided to sustain businesses impacted from them.
