The Prime Minister will announce live on television at 4pm today that London and much of SE England is being placed in Tier 4, alongside UK wide adjustments or even the cancellation of relaxing rules over Christmas.
There has been an unusually high volume of communications today between Westminster and the three devolved nations. Nicola Sturgeon is chairing an emergency meeting with the Scottish cabinet this afternoon and will now also hold a press conference at 5.30pm. The focus of the conference is understood to follow new data related to the new variant of coronavirus. The Scottish First Minister will be speaking alongside Scotland’s chief medical officer and the national clinical director.
In Downing Street Prof Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance will join the PM as their concerns grow around the new coronavirus variant and hospital admissions at 90% of capacity.
The move will see even more hospitality businesses that currently can still trade join the majority in being unable to following the announcement.
