The Government is spending huge amounts of money on advertising asking companies to “make sure they are ready for Brexit”, but, again pause, but, there is no definition of what Brexit is or what is required to meet it yet agreed. So, what indeed are Government asking companies to prepare for?
With only 15 days to go before the Brexit transition deadline expiring, the Government are still playing poker with the EU to see who will blink first. The chips being played are of course not their own, but those of the businesses that depend upon trading with the EU.
For all too many hospitality businesses that are reliant on imports and exports of goods within the EU, this puts unnecessary additional strain on them.
Dependant upon whatever the final outcome is, and that is still very much in the balance, the variances of that outcome needs to be adjusted to. So, advertising asking businesses to make sure they are ready for unspecified changes, makes no sense whatsoever.
The disconnect of Government from the realities of businesses has already been demonstrated this week when the Government imposed Tier 3 Covid-19 restrictions on London. With no warning businesses were closed, tens of thousands of them. This not only handed operators the heart-breaking task of making people redundant just before Christmas, but also how to deal a mountain of food waste.
It really is time that the Government adjusted their outlook to take the practicalities of interpreting their esoteric strategies into account.
