Boris Johnson will hold a televised news conference at 4pm today where he is widely expected to announce a new full lockdown in England.
Earlier today leaks that the government were considering the move to national lockdown two were widely reported but the timing was anticipating an announcement on Monday. The leak and subsequent uncertainty fueling growing concerns around the lockdown must have forced Boris Johnson to bring his timing forward.
The Prime Minister’s 4pm announcement will see him joined by England’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty and the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.
There are currently no reports that Rishi Sunak will join the panel, so any economic announcement to accompany the news does not seem likely currently. This could change in the hours ahead.
It is expected a new stay at home order similar to the first back in March will be announced, with hospitality shut down.
