Government make face masks mandatory in England

July 14, 2020

Boris Johnson makes face masks mandatory in England

Late last night the Government changed from advising people in England to wear face masks where close contact with other people takes place, to making it mandatory from 24 July.

Face masks became mandatory from 15 June for people travelling on public transport, this latest move will see it applied comprehensively.

The move follows hot on the heels of a similar move by the World Health Organisation rethinking how Covid-19 spreads in the air.  WHO have acknowledged there is emerging evidence that the coronavirus can be spread by tiny particles suspended and maintained in the air for longer than previously thought.

WHO had maintained that Covid-19 was primarily transmitted via droplets emitted by people coughing or sneezing. Then droplets that linger in the air descend onto surfaces can be dealt with, in part, through hand washing.

It has now emerged from WHO that 239 scientists from 32 countries no longer agree and say there is also strong evidence to suggest that the Covid-19 virus spreads in air. The scientists now think that smaller particles remain in the air and can be transmitted for hours after people talk, or breathe out.

Only days ago, WHO stated there was clear evidence of smaller particle transmission and suggested this was most likely in enclosed and crowded spaces.

WHO are still evaluating advice on more widespread use of masks, and social distancing, with a focus on bars, restaurants, shops and public transport.

The Government in recent days were once again being accused of mixed messaging, and late last night made things clear. Wear face masks when in close contact with other people will be mandatory from 24 July.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock will be making an announcement today setting out the Government’s new guidance on face coverings.
