Hernö’s latest Ginnovative Twists from Love Drinks

December 9, 2019

Love Drinks has further fortified its diverse portfolio with the addition of two widely-anticipated limited edition Swedish gins from Hernö – one of Europe’s most awarded craft distilleries.

The two new lines which have launched in the UK include a smoky Hernö Sipping Gin #1.3 ex-Ardbeg Casks and a Hernö Blackcurrant Gin.  The special gins are available immediately in 500ml bottles.

Samantha Burke, Managing Director of Love Drinks, said: “With an incredible reputation around the world for its quality and innovation, Hernö continues to lead the way when it comes to unique craft gins that really capture the imagination of mixologists and consumers alike.  Even in the face of a fierce and competitive category, Hernö goes from strength to strength so we’re excited to bring Jon’s latest creations to the UK.”

Hernö Sipping Gin #1.3 ex-Ardbeg Casks

A unique project set up by Hernö to strengthen the tourism in their region and attract visitors to their special little corner of the world. Each year Hernö Gin is cask-matured in casks previously used to age and refine other goodies.

Description: Matured in cask previously used by Ardbeg, meet the Smokin’ hot Hernö Sipping Gin #1.3 ex-Ardbeg cask. Clear and light straw in colour, yet a heavy player with strength, dark in taste. Bold with long lasting smoky notes.

Nose: Sweet fruits, a floral touch and peat as well as a hint of espresso. Underlying toffee and vanilla yet fresh citrus and a green pine.

Palate: Juniper upfront accompanied by heavy peat and sweet toffee and pear. Peppery and gives off a little heat.  A soft creamy texture.

Finish: Long lingering smoke.  It flourishes into juniper and cassia and fruity notes. A dry long salty finish.

ABV: 49.1 %.

Recommended Serve: To be sipped straight or over ice.

Hernö Blackcurrant Gin

Description: To make this masterpiece, Hernö Gin is infused with bucketfuls of ripe blackcurrant berries which have matured for a couple of days, before being pressed and finally sweetened to enhance all the flavours of the fruit.

Nose: Bright, crisp blackcurrant with a hint of jammy tartness and a soft floral sweetness.

Palate: Juniper up front followed by an emerging range of complex flavours of the fruit, bold blackcurrant and sweetness with a hint of green notes of the leaf.

Finish: A long finish, with a definite dry tartness and a touch of acidity followed by a hint of nuttiness.

ABV: 28 %.

Recommended Serve: French 75

About Hernö – It all started back in 1999 when Jon Hillgren headed to London together with a few friends to start working as bartenders. He quickly discovered gin and instantly fell in love with it.

During the years that followed, Jon’s passion for the drink evolved into gin crafting, and after numerous gin tastings, academic studies and technical visits to distilleries around the world, Jon finally founded the Hernö Gin Distillery in 2011. At the time, it was Sweden’s first dedicated gin distillery and the world’s northernmost gin distillery.

The distillery is located in the village of Dala, just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland, Sweden. All part of the UNESCO world heritage area called The High Coast of Sweden, it is an area of real natural beauty.

Jon takes inspiration from this beauty to create a truly organic, artisan gin with the finest botanicals. To stay true to its Swedish heritage, the distillery is built in a traditional Swedish manor in wood painted in red and white.

Hernö is now available in 25 countries around the world and between 2012-17, Hernö was the most awarded gin in Europe.  British Airways’ in-flight magazine ‘Highlife’ describes it as the best distillery in the world to taste gin.  Jon Hillgren was inducted into the Gin Hall of Fame in 2019.
