Leading hospitality academic joins the University of Northampton

November 4, 2018

Dr Roy C Wood

Students on the University of Northampton’s hospitality programmes will benefit from the knowledge of a leading industry expert who has just joined the institution’s lecturing staff.

Referenced globally as a leading academic in the field of hospitality and tourism, Dr Roy C. Wood joined the University’s Faculty of Business and Law for the 2018/19 academic year.

He previously held professorships at the University of Strathclyde; Breda University of Applied Sciences; the University of Macau – where he was also the business faculty associate dean for curriculum and teaching – and Leeds Beckett University.

He has held private sector posts as principal and managing director of IMI University Centre (Switzerland); dean of the Oberoi Hotel Group Centre for Learning and Development (India); and chief operating officer of the Gulf Hospitality and Tourism Education Company (Bahrain).

Dr Wood is the author, co-author, editor and co-editor of some 16 books and 50 refereed research papers; has held numerous visiting academic appointments; and is a long-standing member of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.

In 2014, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the UK Council for Hospitality Management Education in recognition of his contribution to the hospitality field.

Dr Angela Anthonisz, the Head of Subject for Events, Tourism & Hospitality, said: “This is an important appointment to us in terms of Roy’s research profile, industry background, international experience and reputation in the field of hospitality.  His reputation will help enhance the delivery on the subject group portfolio which now includes a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide students with the key skills and knowledge needed for employment in a dynamic global industry’.

“From a student perspective the insight he can provide in terms of what has, and is happening in industry is exceptional and he has his own book series so his credibility in terms of his knowledge and understanding should enhance the student experience.”

Commenting on his new appointment, Dr Wood said: “I am pleased to be joining the University of Northampton in light of the institution’s commitment to learning and the development of advanced teachings. With the integration of active blended learning, the University offers the committed educationalist a range of opportunities for energising students and enhancing the student experience.”
