Tommy Heaney will open his eponymous restaurant, Heaney’s on Wednesday 10th October. Located in Pontcanna in Cardiff this will be Tommy’s first solo venture which is entirely self-funded via life savings and overwhelming support from Crowd Funding.
A self-taught chef, Tommy Heaney started his culinary career in America where he started washing dishes, but soon found himself running the pass in his Uncle’s restaurants, Legends in Maryland. With a clear ambition to become Head Chef as fast as possible, Tommy quickly achieved this and with mission accomplished he decided to take a break from cooking all together. Lured back into the kitchen 5 years later, Tommy fully reengaged with cooking during his time running Restaurant Tommy Heaney at The Great House in Bridgend. During his 4 year stint here, Tommy took full advantage of the creative freedom he was given to develop his own menu and bettered his cooking via various self-initiated ‘stages’ in London’s leading kitchens including Daboous and le champignon sauvage. Rave reviews for the restaurant and an invitation to appear on Great British Menu quickly followed and Tommy’s reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting culinary talents was secured.
Heaney’s will take residence in the former site of Arbennig Restaurant and Tommy has already completed a sell-out six week pop up on the site. A 50 seater restaurant, Heaney’s will be centred on sharing plates and offer a daily changing menu. Taking an unconventional approach to his menu, Tommy refuses to be ‘tied down’ to the daily pressure of pre-planned menus, preferring instead to decide what to cook on the day which will allow Tommy to make the most of what’s in season and the availability from his suppliers. Passionate and creative at heart Tommy has always been determined to push boundaries and wants to create a fresh and exciting restaurant that will always leave you wanting more. In an area of high street restaurants and mega-brands, Tommy provides a refreshing antidote where individuality is central to everything he does.
An additional mezzanine floor which can accommodate a further 30 covers will take the form of a cocktail bar, ideal for pre and post dinner drinks. A large table for up to 10 guests will also be available to book for private parties or provide a fun, sharing table for willing diners.
The interior of Heaney’s will showcase accents of Tommy’s life; his local tattooist will give a nod to Tommy’s own body art via painting a feature for one of the central walls and likewise the artwork of Tommy’s best mate (also a tattooist) who sadly passed recently will be on display throughout the restaurant in loving memory of him. Following an industrial décor, fuss and flounce will be non-existent; instead a relaxed and contemporary vibe will create a hub for urban foodies and destination diners alike.
