As news broke this week of an East London pub charging £22.50 for a pint of beer, many are questioning if the craft beer market has gone too far. Simon Bunn, Co-Founder of Brewhouse & Kitchen, believes that this news represents a diversification of brewing and a step in the right direction.
Simon Bunn:
“While many may see a pint of beer for £22.50 as an excessive price, it is important to note that these prices are not an industry-wide movement towards unattainable prices in pubs and bars. Rather, it is a movement in the industry to widen the scope of beers offered. There will still be reasonably priced beers on offer wherever craft beer enthusiasts go, but by offering premium beers at premium prices, brewers and pubs are following an inevitable path dictated by massive growth in the craft beer industry. It is only natural that such growth has resulted in brewers meeting demand for a more luxury beer-drinking experience. Having a premium enter the market is reflective of the diversity on offer. However, we must ensure that these luxury beers are in-keeping with the spirit of craft brewing as an inclusive and welcoming one, so that the whole of society can experience craft brewing at its best, regardless of price point.”
