In line with recent statistics around marine plastic pollution, bespoke contract caterer, Talkington Bates has pledged to make a significant difference to the catering service it provides and has urged other contract caterers to follow suit.
The company is, with immediate effect, replacing plastic water bottles with canned water and various glass alternatives as well as supporting the free water refill initiative. Talkington Bates has partnered with CanO Water, an environmentally friendly and innovative resealable still and sparkling water company, to provide sites with their water needs.
In addition, they also aim to reduce over a million plastic items from their sites by removing at least 85% of all plastic food products from staff restaurants by the end of 2018; will carry out a complete review of all supply chain food packaging and will continue to move to starch-based compostable salad boxes, grab ‘n’ go pots and cutlery over the coming months.
Paul Bates, Joint Managing Director of Talkington Bates, says: “Sustainability has always been a top priority for Talkington Bates and after speaking with our clients we have received overwhelming support and positive feedback in our quest to remove all plastic water bottles and as much other plastic goods as possible from our sites.
“The idea that plastic bottles could outweigh fish in our oceans by 2050 is absolutely shocking and, as an industry, we must join forces to do all we can to cut the use of plastic from the catering environment.”
Talkington Bates, which is known for its premium, tailored service has the full backing from its clients, supportive comments so far include: “We are totally behind this move forward and fully support this initiative” and “I think that is a wonderful idea which I support 100%”.
