This June will see Pamban – a new all-day chai and coffee house – open in Camden Market.
Opening seven days from morning till evening, it will serve a unique menu of chai and coffee-based drinks with an original ‘eats’ menu and will work closely with a selection of artisan suppliers in the UK, Sri Lanka and India.
The 1000 sq.ft site designed by Studio Thomas will have 37 covers and a further eight outside. It is a listed brick building, formally a horse stable and has wooden floors and high ceilings. Skandi-influenced in design with clean, contemporary and functional lines, the exotic warmth is brought in via warm woods, clay cutlery and powder coated steel as well as greenery. A cluster of tables for small groups provides a bustling energetic space alongside a communal table for larger parties providing a perfect haven for all. A key element is the chai counter with seating, where customers can watch the preparation of chai brewing.
A focal feature is the merchandise wall, a reflection of Pamban and its offering. Available to purchase will be a selection of chai and coffee related equipment and their handmade chai clay cups. Seasonal house espresso blend ‘Adda’ and teas including Sri Lankan green tea will also feature and stock will continue to evolve over time.
Fittingly named after the island sitting between India and Sri Lanka, Pamban represents both the ethnic origins of the duo behind the venture, Mayhul Gondhea, an ex-strategy analyst with McKinsey & Co. and Aruna Sellahewa, who has a background in Asset Management.
