The Lakes Distillery, Cumbria’s only distillery, is holding two Alternative Burns Night celebrations this year and there won’t be a haggis in sight at either.
The Alternative Burns Nights take place on the 20th and the 27th of January and will feature tales from the UK’s first Laureate for Story Telling – the renowned Taffy Thomas MBE – and a tutored tasting session with either Paul Currie, the Founder and Managing Director of The Lakes Distillery or John Drake, the Distillery Manager.
Thomas, England’s leading proponent for storytelling, will be telling the tales of the notorious Lakeland moonshine smuggler Lanty Slee and his adventures avoiding the excise men of the 1800’s, while one of the distillery’s whisky aficionados will guide guests through a tutored tour of exceptional whiskies including the distillery’s own The ONE – the only British blended whisky in existence.
Rather than haggis, neeps and tatties, a four course feast, overseen by Michelin-starred Executive Chef Terry Laybourne, will be enjoyed, providing guests with treats including Jerusalem artichoke soup with truffle cream, beef fillet with braised oxtail and hot chocolate soufflé with The ONE whisky ice cream.
Tickets cost £45 and those wanting to make the evening into a Burns Night Break can enjoy a night at the distillery’s partner hotel – the Trout Hotel, located on the banks of the River Derwent in the gem town of Cockermouth, just a few miles away, from £135 per room per night on a bed and breakfast basis, with transport provided from the distillery at the end of the evening.
The Lakes Distillery is Cumbria’s first whisky distillery for over 100 years. It produces a range of award winning spirits including The Lakes Gin and The Lakes Vodka and boasts a world class Visitor Centre offering tours and tastings. The Bistro at the Distillery is once again featured in the Michelin Guide 2017. The Lakes Malt, Cumbria’s first malt whisky, will be available on pre sale from September 2017.
