On 19th October, Gunpowder in Spitalfields, will be celebrating Diwali, the ancient Festival of Lights, with a one-off Lamb Feast. The restaurant will be filled with traditional clay oil lamps and colourful flowers throughout, setting the scene for a night of festivities.
Diwali is typically a time to celebrate the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, celebrating with friends and family over plentiful festive meals. There is no traditional dish for the five days of Diwali, only that there is food and plenty of it, and so, Gunpowder’s tables will be laden with a feast of lamb dishes designed to be shared, including: Masala and Whiskey Bone Marrow; Gunpowder’s signature Maa’s Kashmiri Lamb Chops; Minced Lamb and Pea Doughnut; and Bheja Fry – lambs’ brain fried with spices. No Diwali feast would be complete without an abundance of sweets. The dinner will be topped off with a dessert of Cardamom Rice Kheer with Salted Caramel and Sutarfeni – an Indian shredded sweet, blended with melted sugar.
Gunpowder founder Harneet Baweja says, “At the very heart of every Diwali celebration is family and food. My own family feasts are a source of inspiration, we would all get together and scramble, hands diving over the table, for the plates brimming with treats my maa and grandmother had prepared for us all. It’s an experience I can’t wait to replicate and share with our guests at Gunpowder.”
To toast the celebration, cocktails including Pani Puri Margaritas, a mix of Tamarind spiced water, tequila, Cointreau and a puchka spiced rim; Bow Barracks Gimlet, mixing gin, lime, ginger and honey; or a warming blend of Whisky & Tea, will be available.
