The owners of a leading Angus hotel are celebrating the completion of £1 million investment which has increased the number of staff and lifted the venue to four star status.
The 120-year-old Glenesk Hotel & Conference Centre in Edzell has been the subject of a major, three-year refurbishment programme which has focused on upgrading the venue’s public areas and increased the number of bedrooms to 38. The project has also created 12 new permanent jobs, plus additional seasonal posts, at the hotel with staff numbers expected to rise further pending additional upgrading work which is in the pipeline.
The investment has also resulted in the award of four stars from Scotland’s national tourism organisation, Visit Scotland and the securing of a Taste Our Best accreditation as part of the organisation’s scheme to recognise and celebrate businesses which provide locally sourced, quality food and drink.
The popular hotel – which was taken over by Dylan and Alena Wren in 2012 – prides itself on retaining the building’s original, classic charm and successfully marrying it with modern additions such as conference and leisure facilities. In addition is a well-stocked bar boasting over 400 malts, 200 gins, 100 rums, 70 vodkas and a large selection of bottled ales.
Commenting on the recent refurbishment, Glenesk Hotel & Conference Centre co-proprietor Dylan Wren said: “We are delighted that this significant project has led to the creation of new jobs at the Glenesk Hotel and we are proud to be breathing new life into this local landmark in its milestone 120th year.”
Angus Council’s tourism spokesperson Cllr Mairi Evans added: “Business growth is vital to the Angus economy and it is great to see a company making this level of strategic investment in both its infrastructure and its people.
“This development will undoubtedly add value to the accommodation provision in Angus and help meet the needs of future visitors especially in the next few years when we see The Open return to Carnoustie in 2018 and the completion of the V&A in nearby Dundee.”
