Since the arrival of the new EU regulations covering food service in December 2014, knowing about any of the 14 major allergens in the food that you serve has become a requirement for all food service outlets. After some initial resistance the food service industry has now largely got its head round the requirements and is realising that the ‘freefrom’ market offers considerable, as yet almost totally untapped, potential. The FreeFrom Eating Out Awards aim to encourage food service to develop this market which will not only grow their businesses but hugely benefit the allergic, intolerant and coeliac community.
The shortlist for the 2015 FreeFrom Eating Out Awards demonstrates how food service is getting to grips with both the challenge and the opportunity, with representation of every sort of outlet from a large conference centre to a local community café – plus an ever growing list of companies manufacturing products for food service: from staples such as gluten-free chips and bake-in-a-bags gluten-free table rolls to dairy-free pestos and gluten-free beers.
Says awards director, Michelle Berriedale-Johnson:
‘It is great to see how many outlets from all across the country have now got their heads around the new allergen regulations and are already creating exciting, innovative and super healthy ‘freefrom’ menus. From the local chippie to the five star restaurant or the high street chain, coeliacs and those with allergies and intolerances do now stand a realistic chance of being served not only a safe, but a really tasting and interesting meal.’
Winners and presentations
The winners will be announced at a presentation party at 3.30pm on Tuesday 17th November, the first day of the Food Matters Live event at Excel in London’s Docklands.
The presentations will be made by awards patron, celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson.
