Nathan Outlaw’s eponymous restaurant re-opened to the public earlier this month after its relocation to Port Isaac at the beginning of the year. The first and only 2 Michelin starred restaurant in Cornwall now boasts spectacular panoramic sea views from its two level dining space perched at the top of the historical fishing village of Port Isaac.
“I have been really fortunate with the previous locations of Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, but this just ticked every box when I new it was available. This has been my first opportunity to plan and create the restaurant I wanted from kitchen to dining room, top to bottom, and with one of the best views in Cornwall I’m not sure I’d ever get the chance again.”
Open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday as well as lunch on Friday and Saturday, the recently renovated restaurant re-opens after its move from the St. Enodoc Hotel in Rock at the end of last year. The hotel was home to Restaurant Nathan Outlaw as well still being home to Outlaw’s, also run by Nathan, which serves lunch and dinner daily and has become an extremely popular destination for gastronomes and those wanting a relaxed dining experience in yet again another top location. “Outlaw’s has grown from strength to strength over the years and although it’s sad for the two restaurants not to be under the same roof, both can establish their own identity and give guests a truly unique experience in different locations.”
Same team in place
Serving its seafood tasting menu (£99) for lunch and dinner Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, although newly settled in Port Isaac, has not made any changes to its much-celebrated offering other than including a set lunch menu (£49) for those opting to experience a shorter menu for lunch. In fact, the 37 year old chef has made the move and kept the very same team in place both kitchen and front of house, with the one addition of Anna Davey who has been appointed Restaurant Manager after working for Nathan in Outlaw’s at the St. Enodoc Hotel since 2011.
On the move Nathan said:
“It’s really just the change of scenery and the staircase that’s different. We’re not changing anything with the food and it’s still the same familiar faces out front. Damon Little (sommelier) and Stephanie Little (restaurant host) have worked with me for over 8 years now and Chris Simpson (Head Chef) has been working on off with me since I opened my first restaurant back in 2003.”
Port Isaac
The new restaurant is not Nathan’s first experience of Port Isaac as he opened Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen in 2013, which prepares small seafood plates cooked to order and served when ready and was awarded 1 Michelin Star after its first year of being open. “There is a charm to Port Isaac which I think I really fell in love with when we opened up [Outlaw’s] Fish Kitchen. Not only do you have access to possibly the best crab and lobsters in the UK, but there is a lively fishing community at the very heart of the village, and being able to talk to the guys that are out at sea daily gives you an experience and an insight I don’t think you would otherwise get inland.”
With just a short walk and steep hill dividing Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen at the bottom of the village in front of the harbour, and Restaurant Nathan Outlaw at the top, next to the car park, the two restaurants look set for a busy summer ahead.
Port Isaac is the home of the ever-popular TV series Doc Martin which is being filmed again this year, in and around the small fishing village, and will no doubt attract its wide national and international following. With this Cornish coastal haven now amassing a total of three Michelin stars, could Port Isaac also be the UK’s next ‘must visit’ foodie destination?
