Actor, writer and presenter Stephen Fry has been named the first ever Celebrity Pub Pal of the Year for 2014.
He received the accolade after 2,000 people were asked, ‘Which British celebrity would you most like to have a drink down the pub with?’ Stephen Fry was the most popular suggestion, beating David Beckham and X Factor favourite Cheryl Cole to the top post.
The new title has been awarded to Stephen by leading pub retailer and brewer Greene King and recognises Stephen as Britain’s most popular celebrity today.
The top five celebrity pub pals for 2014 were:
- Stephen Fry
- David Beckham
- Cheryl Cole (Cheryl Fernandez-Versini)
- Jeremy Clarkson
- Robbie Williams
Mark Blythman, communications director for Greene King, said: “We go to the pub with our friends and the people we most want to spend time with, so a fantasy pub pal is a good measure of the popularity of today’s celebrities.
“It also gives us a real insight into what the nation likes and it is great to see a diverse list of professions in the top five. As one of this country’s most loved actors and personalities, it was not a surprise to see Stephen Fry top the chart and I am sure he will retain his place in the nation’s heart for some time to come.”
Hundreds of famous names were nominated in the research and Peter Kay, Boris Johnson and David Attenborough were among other popular suggestions.
