Even the best pubs these days seek to serve great coffee, and customers at the Old Custom House in Padstow have been trying their hand (see picture below) at being baristas to celebrate the opening of the pub’s new Brewer & Bean coffee house.
On 26 June, a coffee tasting and training session was hosted by Cornish Coffee’s head barista Henry Northeast, with samples and explanations of the combination of coffee used to make the Brewer & Bean blend, and a lesson in making the perfect espressos, lattes and cappuccinos.
The Old Custom House is the third St Austell Brewery pub to open a dedicated Brewer & Bean coffee outlet, with others already open at the Great Western Hotel in Newquay and Atlantic Hotel on the Isles of Scilly.
Boosting daytime trade
A wide range of coffees are available to drink in or takeaway, alongside a selection of teas, Fairtrade hot chocolate and a tempting selection of cakes and snacks made by Sarah Allen, daughter of Old Custom House manager Linda Prior, who commented:
“The Brewer & Bean coffee shop has been open for less than a week, but it’s already really busy and the feedback we’ve had has been fantastic. The coffee tasting and training session was a great way of introducing our new offer to people in Padstow and showcasing the quality of the ingredients used to make our coffee. Being able to enjoy top quality hot drinks and homemade food in the unique atmosphere of a pub coffee shop will help to boost daytime trade for the Old Custom House.”
Brewer & Bean coffee –a growing brand
St Austell Brewery’s Catering and Development Manager Nick Hemming worked closely with Cornish Coffee to create Brewer & Bean coffee, using a combination of two Fairtrade beans; Robusta from Uganda and Arabica from Guatemala, Honduras, Peru and Salvador.
As well as the three Brewer & Bean coffee outlets at the Old Custom House, Great Western Hotel and Atlantic Hotel, the coffee is being sold behind the bar across St Austell Brewery’s estate of pubs and inns in the South West. St Austell Brewery is looking to grow the brand, with more outlets planned to meet the demand for high quality, convenient coffee in locations away from the high street.
