A new report has been published that identifies for the first time the key trends and growth opportunities within the sale of beer, wines and spirits online in the UK.
Wilson Drinks Report (“WDR”), who set up and contribute to the WSTA Market Report, has consolidated ePOS data from 11 leading online retailers. The result is a unique analysis of sales of wine online split by a combination of colour and country of origin, showing growth trends for both volume and value for Q3 2013 compared to Q3 2012 (Q3 is calendar weeks 27-39).
One of the key findings from WDR’s analysis of the data is the massive jump in sales of Italian sparkling wine (mostly Prosecco). Volumes for Q3 2013 were up 67% and value sales were up 76% compared to Q3 2012.
Outperforming sales of champagne
Tim Wilson, Managing Director of WDR, commented : “We were expecting a strong online sales performance by Prosecco, but these results are even better than we expected. Not only have Italian sparkling wines outperformed sales of Champagne in both volume and value, the total volume of Italian sparkling wine has jumped above Champagne to take the #1 spot. However, the total sales value of Champagne was more than double the total sales value of Italian sparkling wine, so it will be a while before Prosecco can claim to be the UK’s favourite sparkling wine, at least from a value perspective.”
Wilson added : “We have been trying to understand the performance of the UK online market for some time. Our new report uses actual ePOS data from 11 online retailers, including Tesco Wine by the Case, The Wine Society, Majestic Wine and Laithwaites. There is no modelling, no guesswork, just actual data.”
