On 4 December, H&C News wrote about the 150 bottled beers going on sale at Tilleys Bar in Newcastle, as well as their invitation to four of the north east’s most popular breweries to each brew a one-off, unique-formula draught beer – but stipulated beer with huge hoppiness (at least 150 IBUs). See link below for the original article.
The breweries to take up the challenge were Tyne Bank, Brew Lab, Anarchy and Allendale.
The four special beers were launched on the 15th and the response was overwhelming – such that the pub had the highest takings on any one day (including home NUFC match days) since The Head Of Steam Ltd took the pub over eight years ago.
The special beers were – Allendale – ‘End 29 #150’ @ ABV 6%; Anarchy – ‘Bedlam’ @ ABV 6.1%; Tynebank – ‘Grizzly Bear’ @ ABV 6%; Darwin (Brewlab) – ‘Galapagos 150’ @ 5.8%.
Tony Ellis, Assistant Manager of Tilleys Bar said:
“The customers went mad for the beers! We had had a lot of interest and anticipation from customers leading up to the 15th, but we didn’t expect quite such a demand. All the top tickers were in and everyone really liked the beers. Funnily, despite the huge hoppiness rating, the beers don’t taste over-the-top for hoppiness – they are exceptionally strongly flavoured, but in a quality way.”
