Our thanks go to Boughtons Coffee House for bringing the initiative of Union of Genius to our attention this week.
Union of Genius is the name of Scotland’s first soup café, which serves up to 6 different homemade soups every day, flavour-matching them with locally-baked artisan breads and using fresh, locally-grown produce for a menu that changes daily and seasonally. And, for those who care, calorie counts and carb content of each soup are provided.
Describing soup as ‘an amazing food – happiness-inducing liquid warmth
in a bowl which comforts, nourishes and sustains’, Union of Genius sets out to offer its customers a ‘truly great lunch’ – and it’s certainly one that H & C News looks forward to sampling!
Not content with soup, salads, cakes and – yes – fresh-brewed coffee are also available.
In keeping with its commitment to using the best, locally-sourced ingredients, Union of Genius composts all its kitchen food waste, and uses compostable takeout packaging supplied by Vegware which is made from plant materials – cups, boxes, bowls, lids, and cutlery.
Now, they are also offering loyalty points for customers who return used takeout packaging for composting. The scheme is called ‘Full Circle’, and customers are even allowed to bring their own cups instead of takeout packaging for hot drinks – and Union of Genius awards loyalty point to those who do so.
So – everyone wins: fresh, delicious food with creative flavour combinations, using locally-sourced ingredients; delivered in an environmentally low-impact way; and generating loyalty and repeat business that’s good for cafe and customer alike.
