The last issue of eInsideTrack took a quick look at planning for the impacts of snow this winter, little realising it would arrive quite so quickly (see article). Now it’s time to live with the realities, and one very basic reality that affects all businesses (and householders) is whether to clear snow and ice from pavements and public spaces.
In recent years, and fearful of legal consequences, both businesses and householders have worried about clearing snow and ice. However, there is no law to stop you doing so, and – according to directgov, the UK government’s digital service to deliver information and practical advice – it’s unlikely you’ll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully.
However, you should follow the ‘snow code’ when clearing snow and ice, which can be found at the Directgov Website
The advice is short and straightforward, and points out that people have a responsibility to be careful themselves!
