This Summer, Gunpowder, the home-style Indian kitchen from Harneet Baweja will bring the shores of Southern India to Spitalfields. Their new seafood only menu will takeover the restaurant every Friday throughout July and August.
Created by Harneet and Head Chef Nirmal Save, the regularly changing menu will champion sustainably caught fish sourced from British waters. Inspired by the BBQs of Goa and Kerala, the menu will include Crab Cutlet Moilèe; Haryali Sea Bass; Pickle Spice Scallop with Wild Garlic Chutney; Reshade Mackerel Fry; and Lobster Balchow. Nirmal will draw on cooking techniques developed on the BBQ at his family farm on the coast of Maharashtra, with flavours and spices which reflect the tropical climes of Southern India. Gunpowder’s Seafood menu will be paired with a wine flight, selected by Harneet.
“There’s nothing better than a British Summer holiday to the seaside where you indulge on fish and chips on a Friday evening. Growing up in India, Nirmal and I’s version was quite different – we’d head South to the coast and our fish and chips came in the form of fresh seafood from the Indian Ocean with sweet, coconut curries. We wanted to bring this Southern Indian BBQ-style cooking to London, using British produce with some of our favourite dishes” says Harneet.
Gunpowder’s Seafood menu will be available exclusively on Fridays throughout July and August.
