STOKE Place has been added to the National Heritage List for England at Grade II to give extra protection to the site’s stunning garden designed by Capability Brown during a year that marks the 300th anniversary of his birth.
The listed status comes as the country house hotel in Slough, which was acquired by Newcastle-headquartered Cairn Group in January 2016, undergoes a renovation working closely with Historic England to highlight its impressive heritage.
Dating back to 1668, the estate’s rich history has seen visits from royalty, as well as its strong affiliation with Capability Brown – the nationally-renowned landscape architect who was at the height of his career when commissioned to design a pleasure garden by then owner George Howard.
Brown’s vision saw the creation of the garden’s focal point, a scenic lake, alongside an orangery, a rotunda, and grassy lawn areas with woodland pathways running throughout, creating scenic walking routes which visitors can still enjoy today.
Enlisting the expertise of project designers Alistair W Baldwin Associates, the development of the grounds, including the pleasure garden, form part of wider restoration plans to sympathetically uplift the impressive space to its former glory. The works will touch on all areas of the estate, and also within the main building and its 39 bedrooms.
An exciting new dining concept is also due to open in October called The King and Lamb, in honour of Patrick Lamb, who was appointed at the property as master cook to the Queen Consort and Sergeant of His Majesty’s Pastry in Ordinary in 1677, and later bought and developed the estate between 1683 and 1723, before passing it down to his son.
Cairn Group finance director, Richard Warren, said: “Stoke Place is a venue boasting a beautiful setting and picturesque grounds, with fascinating history at its core. We are extremely proud that the grounds have been acknowledged with Grade II protected status thanks to their spectacular beauty and the work of Capability Brown.
“Our ambitious investment plans will see a substantial cash injection enhance the estate’s offering to guests, with the hopes of exceeding all expectations upon each and every visit, to position Stoke Place as the premier country house hotel on the doorstep of London.”
Alistair Baldwin, managing director at Alistair W Baldwin Associates, said: “It’s a real privilege to work with these grounds which are steeped in history and rich with evidence of Capability Brown’s creative flair. The potential that Stoke Place has is immense.
“The pleasure garden is truly unique, and it’s fantastic that this has been recognised by Historic England. Our plans for the restoration of the grounds are inspired by the people and families who have influenced them throughout the years, including Brown, and I’m looking forward to working with such a well-regarded public body on this landmark project.”
