North Brewing Co is continuing its rapid growth by launching two of its core range beers in cans. Based in Leeds (UK), the brewery only launched 6 months ago, but has been making great strides in the regional craft brewing scene.
Set up by the pioneering Leeds-based bar group North Bar Ltd and the successful team behind Belgrave Music Hall and Headrow House, the brewery (and tap) opened in November 2015 at Taverner’s Walk Industrial Estate on the fringe of Leeds City Centre and initially serviced the eight bars currently operated by the two bar groups. Brewers Seb Brink (formerly of Golden Owl) and Darius Darwell (of Bristol Beer Factory) are behind the recipes of the beers, which vary from classic British styles to exciting and interesting flavour combinations.
The team have collaborated with a number of breweries in recent months, including Drygate Brewery in Glasgow and most recently brewing a Yorkshire rhubarb sour beer with Lervig Brewery from Norway. The brew team have also designed specific beers for Leeds based bars Sheaf St Cafeteria and Outlaws Yacht Club. A collaboration beer with craft beer giant Brewdog is lined up for June.
Following the launch of Herzog and Sputnik the cans will be available through selected bottle shops, bars and at the brewery tap to take away. The brewery has also teamed up with national beer club Beer 52 to offer their west coast style IPA, Transmission, to subscribers in July’s delivery.
North Brewing Co’s Herzog and Sputnik will make their can debut this weekend at Leeds Feast 2016 (28th / 29th May) as part of the Leeds Indie Food Festival wrap-weekend. Following the launch of Herzog and Sputnik the cans will be available through selected bottle shops, bars and at the brewery tap to take away.
Leeds Feast will take place across three venues this year; North Brewing Co Tap Room, Belgrave Music Hall and Headrow House.
The list of street food vendors at North Brewing Co includes Tikk’s Thai, Meltworks, Poffertjesking, Mei Mei’ Street Cart, Bangers and Bacon, Tandoori naan truck, Madeline Express, Maude Coffee and Longhorns BBQ. As well as an array of culinary delights there will also be live acoustic music from Fran Minney (Saturday) and Toby Thorne (Sunday) and DJs into the evenings.
Herzog
A Kölsch style beer. It is a hybrid of an ale and a lager style, fermented with a genuine Kölsch yeast at ale temperatures and then lagered for three weeks. A little twist was added by dry hopping it with German Tettnang hops, it is crisp and refreshing with a little fruitiness from the yeast.
Sputnik
Sputnik is a dry hopped Pale. Drinkability is key, the body and colour are light. The blend of American hops gives the beer a citrus and pine aroma, whilst tropical and stone fruit also put in a hoppy appearance.
Christian Townsley, Director of North Bar Ltd, said:
“Packaging our beers so that they can reach a wider audience is something that has been high on our list of priorities since we set up the brewery, we’re so excited to be at this point in our business. We love great beers and we love great design, our gifted brewing team and Refold design agency have helped us marry the two. We’ve huge ambition and tremendous confidence in our beers, this is a thrilling time in our business!”
John Gyngell, Director of North Bar Ltd, said:
“We’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past six months. Leeds Feast is the perfect event for our can launch. Partnering with ‘them that can’ will help us to ensure the consistency and quality our fantastic and loyal customers demand. Launching our beer in cans is the first of a number of projects which will strengthen our position in the uk craft beer scene”
James Ockelford (Refold) on the can design: “The can design represents a continuation of our love affair with the North Brewing Co arrows. We have had a bit of fun playing with various finishes. The colours should seem familiar – you will likely have seen them on keg badges at North Bar et al, Belgrave, Headrow House and Sheaf St Cafeteria for months now.”
