The Meetings Industry Association (mia) will be hosting a high-profile debate looking at the specific implications on the meetings, events and hospitality industry, should the UK opt to stay or leave the EU in June.
Chaired by Conference News editor Paul Colston, the debate on 23 May at The Honorable Artillery Company, London, will feature a carefully selected panel at the forefront of the campaign including representatives from both Britain Stronger in Europe and Vote Leave as well as industry trainer and consultant Richard John.
As the industry employs high numbers of European staff on its payroll, the debate is likely to discuss the impact on employment, recruitment and contracts should the UK opt for the exit vote in the referendum. Will it lead to a particular ‘severe skills shortage’ in the sector as some are predicting?
Similarly, the impact on international supplier contracts will be examined as the UK would be operating under different principles of EU contract law. Will Britain need to put different trading agreements in place with every country it imports/exports goods from?
Other hot topics likely to be looked at include the potential impact on tourism and the economy as a whole.
Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the mia, said: “Talking to our members we are very aware that many remain unsure of the direct impact their cross on the ballot paper could have on our sector. We are therefore keen to help ensure that both our members and the industry as a whole are able to make an informed choice when they head to the polling stations on 23 June.”
At the end of the discussion members of the audience will also get the chance to put their own questions to the panel in a dedicated Q&A.
