Kelso’s Sprouston Primary has become the first borders school to be adopted by the world famous Chef Albert Roux, through his pioneering Chefs Adopt a School initiative.
Chefs Adopt a School is a national charity part of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and Service. Now in its 25th year, the project aims to make food fun, giving children a real culinary experience as they get hands-on in the kitchen with their super skilled mentors.
The programme enhances young people’s awareness and understanding of food by teaching them culinary skills such as how to grow their own produce and explaining the importance of healthy eating.
Pupils welcomed legendary Chef Albert Roux when he visited the school on Tuesday 26 May 2015 to launch the initiative, which will see pupils take part in regular hands-on sessions.
Founded in 1990, the initiative reaches over 20,000 primary and secondary children across the UK every year, with a host of industry experts adopting schools and sharing their invaluable knowledge and talents.
Adopting Sprouston Primary School
Albert Roux, whose acclaimed Chez Roux restaurant has recently launched at the Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Course said: “We decided to adopt Sprouston Primary School as we continue to develop our presence in the borders. It is a great opportunity for us to inspire the next generation of culinary talent in a region famous for its excellent local produce.
“We are extremely proud to have reached a mile stone year and we’re looking forward to celebrating and continuing the project’s success with Sprouston Primary School.”
