The directors of Maclay Group plc have announced that they have appointed EY as Administrators, stating that:
“In recent months the directors have been seeking a strategic solution to the financial pressures facing the business. In light of a solution not emerging in the time available, the directors took this decision in order to protect the employment of its 500 staff and the business which remains profitable.
“EY will now trade the business which comprises 15 pubs and bars across central Scotland with a view to a sale.”
Maclay history
Maclay Inns have been around since 1830 and have a strong heritage in the licensed trade, having belonged to only three families since 1830. The company was founded by James Maclay in Alloa in 1830. In 1870 he built the Thistle Brewery, which remained Maclay’s headquarters until early 2001 when brewing ceased and the company refocused on its portfolio of pubs.
Maclay Craft Beers are still brewed to the original recipes in small batches by Clockwork Beer Co and Belhaven Brewery in the UK, and by Sleeman Brewery in Canada, with Maclay still retaining the rights to the recipes.
Today, Maclay has a portfolio of 15 pubs and inns stretching from Balloch and Glasgow in the West to Edinburgh and St. Andrews in the East.
