Oxford Brookes University’s partnership with Chartwells – which has helped it to become a leading university for ethical sourcing and sustainability – will continue for a further five years in an extension of its catering contract worth £5 million per year.
Under the new contract, Chartwells will continue to provide catering and retail services to 18,000 students, staff, visitors and conference and event customers on three campuses across five sites, while also expanding its service provision to the University’s new John Henry Brookes Building.
Chartwells has provided catering to Oxford Brookes University for 20 years, and has worked closely with the University to promote the importance of creating a sustainable environment to staff and students. As a result of this partnership, Oxford Brookes was the first Fairtrade university in the world as well as the first UK university to gain Marine Stewardship Council Chain of Custody certification.
Alongside these amazing achievements, Chartwells and the University have worked hard to encourage students and staff to grow their own fruit and vegetables through a Kitchen Garden programme and have introduced waste reduction initiatives to reduce the University’s environmental impact. It has also received a number of awards and accreditations in recognition of its sustainable sourcing and promotion of using seasonal produce. As part of this contract extension Chartwells will continue to support Oxford Brookes University’s sustainable initiatives and support the maintenance of its leading position in this field.
With student satisfaction also at the top of its agenda, Chartwells will focus on further developing its offer, bringing on trend ideas including street food and small plate dining to the table, alongside customisable and portable offers such as vibrant fresh salads and deli sandwich offers.
